The sweetest little cakes

It’s casual Vineyard elegance in one bite: a cupcake topped with candied beach glass. The bride who served those also sent guests home with sachets of candied beach glass, says Ezra Sherman, of the new Vineyard Haven specialty bakery Sweet E’s Cupcakes.

Ezra worked at Magnolia in New York City when Sex and the City made that bakery and its cupcakes a sensation. Then in May 2009, he opened Sweet E’s, where the scents and sights from his white-washed wooden cabinets lure cake lovers in from Main Street.

Brides and caterers alike have welcomed this first specialty cupcake bakery on the Island. He did about six weddings in his first six months in business, and was already taking orders for 2010. Serving cupcakes is simpler than serving a wedding cake (no need to cut a hundred slices) and lets guests use their hands – plus you could save on cake-cutting fees.

For one wedding, there were 1,500 pure-white vanilla cakes – “That’s a lot of butter cream,” says Ezra with a laugh. Another bride asked for lavender cakes with lavender-colored frosting, tiered with fresh lavender sprigs cascading out the sides.

Ezra does mini cupcakes for kids, and he can box up cupcakes as take-home favors, with a couple’s customized stickers or stamps.

He does tiers of shimmering good taste, and he’ll do arrangements of several varieties for couples who can’t choose – or ask their guests to choose – just one flavor. Key lime? Peaches and cream? Boston cream pie? Black velvet? Peanut butter? Chocolate- covered cherry? Rainbow? Mocha choco-la? You can see the dilemma. K
