Chloe & Chris

What do you do when your two favorite Island venues are available for your wedding? You book them both, of course.

What do you do when your two favorite Island venues are available for your wedding? For Christopher Massey and Chloe Aronson, the answer was simple: book them both. “It was a no-brainer!” said Chloe.

The couple was first introduced when Chloe’s brother, Carter, Chris’s colleague on a nationally competitive rowing team, invited Chris to their sister’s bat mitzvah. Later, when Chris agreed to a vacation with the Aronson family at their Island home, Chloe’s mother called her. “She told me, ‘Take a sick day! Chris is coming to MV!’” Chloe did, reluctantly; by the time the week was over, they were a couple. They became engaged in December 2014.

Chris and Chloe, who are based in the Washington, D.C., area, hired wedding planner Kristen Gosselin and her crew at KG Events & Design and began exploring venues. They fell in love with two, one of which was the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury – “because of the natural wood, barn doors, as well as the amenities like a kitchen and bathroom already there,” Chloe recalled.

The other was the Captain R. Flanders House in Chilmark. “We immediately fell in love with the rolling hills, stone walls, and camp-like feel of the houses on the property,” she explained. “But we really didn’t want a tent for the reception.”

The Agricultural Hall was already booked on the date they’d chosen, so the Captain R. Flanders House it was. Then it all changed. “Kristen called me and said the date at the Ag Hall had opened up!” The couple opted for both. The ceremony, officiated by Chloe’s brother Carter, was held in Chilmark and the reception in West Tisbury. KG Events arranged for taxis to transport the guests and wedding party from one venue to the other. Both venues lent themselves to their theme – local and seasonal. As Chloe describes it, “lots of greens and pale pinks, whites and off-white colors.” As a bonus, the cost of renting two venues ended up being more economical than setting up a tent reception, Chloe said.

According to Chris, it worked out perfectly. “Just as we arrived at the Ag Hall, a mist rolled in.”
