Barrie & Danny

A small and intimate ceremony followed by one killer reception

Barrie Nussbaum and Danny Levine both grew up spending summer vacations on the Vineyard. In fact, there’s a good chance they interacted over the years: their families were neighbors first at Hillside Homes in Edgartown and again in a Sengekontacket neighborhood. But the pair didn't meet for certain until they were both in Philadelphia and Danny noticed a familiar Vineyard backdrop in Barrie’s picture on a dating app.

“It’s really what brought us together,” said Barrie. “It’s hard to find real connections with people or know if people are legit. The second thing he said to me was, ‘Were you at Long Point?’”

Several Vineyard vacations and an engagement later, the couple decided to bring their loved ones together for a fun-filled wedding weekend. Knowing many guests would take an extended trip to the Island, they planned a full slate of activities, from a sailing bachelor party Wednesday to cocktails and chowder Friday at The Wharf in Edgartown.

On Saturday the party moved to the Tower House in Chilmark as 160 guests watched the couple exchange personal vows against a backdrop of Menemsha Harbor and Vineyard Sound. A rustic, elegant vibe and early fall palette of burgundy, pale pinks, dusky rose, greens, and sea blue also set the tone.

While the ceremony “incorporated traditional elements of a religious Jewish wedding, it was more of a personal statement about what marriage meant to us, and how we feel about each other,” said Danny. Following a reading of seven blessings by the rabbi, the couple wrote their own blessings and had friends read them. Their siblings walked down the aisle, as did their nieces and nephews.

The younger guests were home with babysitters by the time the couple revealed a surprise designed to keep the party going past the 10 p.m. noise curfew. Headphones were handed out, tuned to three different channels – his and hers, plus a playlist prepared by Barrie’s father. A s’mores bar and a second round of snacks kept dancers fueled.

“The ceremony felt incredibly small and intimate and warm and personal,” said Barrie, “and our reception felt like the biggest party I ever went to. Those two things, I can’t believe I got to have both of them in one.”
